the male reproductive tract

This is known as cryptorchidism (hidden gonads) and is thought to be caused by insufficient testosterone production during foetal life. This in turn fails to stimulate secretion of enough calcitonin gene-related peptide needed to trigger testicular descent. For some reason, the incidence of cryptorchidism has increased by 60 per cent over the last 30 years. This may be related to foetal exposure to weak environmental oestrogens.

In many cases, an undescended testicle descends on its own within a few months of birth, so that by the age of 1 year, only 2 per cent of baby boys are affected. After this time, an undescended testis is unlikely to correct itself spontaneously and surgical intervention is needed.

An undescended testis which is left in the abdomen does not develop normally.

The INQUIRER is betting on MS-Yahoo

ASSUME FOR A MOMENT that Microsoft-Yahoo goes through without a hitch. What does the world look like afterwards? Here’s the book on what might come next.

1/3: Massive consolidation in Microsoft/Yahoo web properties. For now, Microsoft will stay quiet on what happens to all those duplicated efforts but it’s pretty obvious that some cherry-picking will occur. Excellent Yahoo sites like Flickr, Finance and Answers should be safe. Microsoft might decide to keep on both Yahoo Mail and Hotmail but there’s no point in paying all that money and then having scads of replica features. Same goes for the respective ad networks.

Evens: Microsoft-Yahoo is deemed a success. Steve Ballmer has a great get-out here. He can say that he’s playing the long game and that the internet war won’t be won in a day.

Who is afraid of Disneyfication? A response to Sonja Hegasy

Ahdaf Soueif did not initially welcome the translation of her novel In the Eye of Sun from English to Arabic (the state-owned literary weekly Akhbar al-Adab did attempt a translation – never easy in the case of an 800-page book). In a public lecture, Soueif declared that only she herself would be truly faithful to the text, but that she would rather write a new novel. This is understandable.

If Soueif had been a victim of the parochialism of Egyptian intellectuals she would not have been invited to the Higher Council on Culture’s conference on the Arab novel in 1998, at which she thanked the council Chairman Gaber al-Asfour for acknowledging her work as belonging to the Arab novel. Soueif’s The Map of Love has been translated into Arabic, and her work Zinat al-Hayat has been published by al-Haya’a al-’Amma lil kitab, the official government press.

CUSTOMER SERVICE: Grace under disaster Hotel guests say MGM Mirage ...

Evacuees from the Monte Carlo watch news coverage on monitors inside the MGM Arena on Jan. 25, the day the hotel-casino caught fire. A consultant says companies that handle catastrophes like fires with honesty and aplomb can secure loyal customers for life.

The burned facade and upper floors of the Monte Carlo after a fire broke out Jan. 25. The fire engulfed parts of the building's facade and roof and forced the evacuation of guests and staff. MGM Mirage had to transfer roughly 5,000 guests to other local hotels and keep them happy.

A Clark County firefighter sprays water on the southern side of Monte Carlo. MGM Mirage, which owns the hotel, offered to put guests displaced by the fire in other, sometimes upgraded, rooms.

Chow & Tell: Taste Buds at Blue Adobe Grille

Along with our dip, we chose a small cup of red chile pork posole soup with spicy mixes of roasted pork and hominy in a red chile broth ($5.25). The red chile pork posole could be an elixir for the ill in small isolated villages. Our server graciously brought us a sample of the green chile chicken corn chowder ($3.50). The chowder was thick and creamy enough to comfort our taste buds. Do you see a theme here? Staying true to the New Mexican cuisine, green/red chile is used in almost every dish at Blue Adobe. The lobster dip was delicious although we would have preferred to enjoy it with tortilla chips instead of the deep fried flour crisps. As for the soups, we liked the red chile pork posole better. The spices and flavor hit the spot. For dinner Jennifer picked the chorizo stuffed chicken ($16), which was a pecan-grilled chicken breast stuffed with chorizo, green chiles, fontina cheese and smothered with anamaretto mushroom cream sauce.

Have you heard the one about the Alexandrian police band ...

Indeed, and justifiably so when you consider that she's a professional TV-serial writer herself. Her previous works include Wagh El-Qamar (Face of the Moon), starring screen legend Faten Hamama and Shams Youm Gedid (The Sun of a New Day) starring Nelly Karim, among numerous other small screen classics.
