Three weeks until it begins anew

It's only January, but two early frontrunners for my top 10 CDs of 2008 were releases this week from two Georgia-based bands: The Whigs' Mission Control and the Drive-By Truckers' Brighter Than Creation's Dark. Also, Atlanta band The Selmanaires have just released another excellent CD, Throw in local bands the Black Lips, Manchester Orchestra and Dead Confederate, and it's a really great time for rock in the Atlanta area.

— In sports we demand excellence, rings, etc. Many among us become peeved at anything short of a title or the No. 1 position. And yet in so much of our pop culture, so many Americans are happy to accept, again and again, vapid mediocrity (or worse) and pure hype. Two words: American Idol.

— And one more entry in my I-just-don't-get-these-times file: In this week's issue of Sports Illustrated, in the Pop Culture Grid on page 27, one of four athletes surveyed is Cleveland Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson.

Idealism drives lawyer Stefani

It was the late 1980s and at first Brown, a veteran officer, was a little unsure of the assignment. Narcotics officers were a tight-knit group that relied heavily on each other during raids.

"I wasn't really all that excited about an outsider coming into the group," Brown said.

But Stefani, a former FBI special agent, eliminated any fears with his talent and his energy, Brown said. He brought a legal eye to the team and helped with search warrants. "He can just about outwork anybody I know," he said.

After completing the ride-alongs, Stefani increased his contact with the department, getting assigned to a drug task force that kept him in contact with Brown. He worked all day at his law practice, kept an eye on the tiny Lake Angelus Police Department that he headed and did drug raids in Detroit at night.

Coastal Post Online

The company's "Health and Wellness" website pictures a smiling family in tennis shoes and workout clothes enjoying a brisk walk. All are consuming Pepsi products. Dad is drinking a can of Pepsi. Grandma is toting a bag of Lay's potato chips. Aside from the questionable workout, we're left to wonder: When did Pepsi become an advocate for health?

Marsha Holmberg, a food editor at the Oregonianwho flew in from Portland, says too many Americans have become culinary illiterates, convinced by television commercials that processed food is nutritious. "Nobody thinks they have the time to cook," Holmberg says. "They think it's complicated. In reality, it takes as much time to make from a mix as it does to make from scratch. It's an illusion that food preparation takes time."

At the convention's bookstore, neat rows of dietitian guidebooks -- with covers of colorful fruit and vegetables, alongside the occasional whole grain cereal or wheat stalk -- lined the booths.

Vlasic sails 2.03, Silnov 2.37 in Arnstad

World Champion Blanka Vlasic and Andrey Silnov won the traditional high jump meeting in Arnstadt (Germany), which saw its 32nd edition on Saturday.

The Croatian was the dominant figure in the women's event, clearing all her heights at her first attempts – including the winning height of 2.03m. That was an improvement of her season's best and world lead by two centimetres. The 24-year-old tried 2.06m twice but then retired from competition.

Olympic Champion Yelena Slesarenko took second place with a season's best of 2.01m while Vita Palamar (Ukraine) was third (1.99). Germany's new High Jump hope Ariane Freidrich, who had jumped two metres for the first time a week ago, had to be content with 1.96 m and fourth place.

Russia's Andrey Silnov tied his personal best and improved his season's best as well as his indoor best with a jump of 2.37m.
