Microsoft's tardiness for documentation extends DOJ oversight to 2009

Scathing words yesterday from the federal judge overseeing Microsoft's compliance with its antitrust decree, accompanied an order that effectively extends the DOJ's oversight period into the next US presidential administration.

Apparently agreeing with the European Commission's assessment that Microsoft has yet to provide adequate documentation for its communications protocols, US District Judge Kathleen Kollar-Kotelly issued an order yesterday extending the Dept. of Justice's oversight period for the company by two years, until November 12, 2009.

Some councillors revved up over free pubic transit service

Is Hamilton ready to provide free transit to residents? Ward 4 Councillor Sam Merulla thinks so.

Mr. Merulla authored a motion last week which was accepted by his council colleagues that asked city staff to investigate implementing a free fare or a small fee only public transit service.

Mr. Merulla was the lone politician who opposed council's recent decision to increase bus fares for the second time in less than a year.

"God bless Sam," said Hamilton Mountain councillor Terry Whitehead. "This is a vision. I think you will see free transit in Hamilton. It makes a lot of sense to reduce gridlock and improve the environment."

Mr. Merulla pointed out reducing bus fares encourages more people to get out of their vehicles, which, in turn, cuts pollution and overall improves the environment.

Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood: Phinney on Phinney

Taylor Phinney's pursuit win at the UCI World Cup in Los Angeles over the weekend sure makes us look smart for putting him and Danny Summerhill on our awards-issue cover.

Thanks, Taylor.

We gave the 17-year-old Phinney and 18-year-old Summerhill our “juniors of the year" award for their 2007 accomplishments, which included Summerhill's silver medal at the world junior cyclocross championship and Phinney's gold at the world junior time trial championship — the first-ever gold in that discipline for an American junior man.

Phinney had begun his second season of racing with a virtual tie for the overall win in the Category 2 Tour of the Gila, racing against men twice his age. He next took the overall win at July's Tour l'Abitibi, then shocked the cycling community in October by winning the national pursuit title at his first-ever velodrome competition.

1646: Goals like London buses at the Emirates, where Tomas Rosicky has doubled the lead for Arsenal against Wigan.

1646: Forster has scored his second of the afternoon to bring Brighton back on level terms with Carlisle at the Withdean.

1645: Arsenal have finally broken Wigan's resistance, captain William Gallas sparing the Gunners' blushes by scoring seven minutes from time.

Fires continue to threaten Hampton Roads after a hectic night

After brief training this afternoon, more than 100 soldiers will be available, according to a news release. Virginia Guard aviation support already is on standby.

Wind and flames teamed to make Sunday night incredibly busy for local firefighters as scores of blazes broke out.

One person was charged with two misdemeanors after fire burned three acres in a Suffolk neighborhood.

"It’s just crazy," Jim Judkins, a Suffolk Fire Department spokesman, said Sunday night. "We’re looking at conditions like they have in California, high winds and low humidity. It’s just a bad day for fires."

Gov. Tim Kaine declared a state of emergency as flames, fanned by winds gusting to 50 mph and higher, swept hundreds of acres of brush and woodland, wrecked a Virginia Beach apartment building, destroyed a Chesapeake home and left motorists stalled as an interstate highway was closed.

797 new area jobs predicted

You have serious problems in Corpus Christi. The town needs to promote N.Padre Island, waiting for the few developements in the city limits to do it, is nuts.

The fact that the Airlines turn up their nose to C.C. is one example of the demise in the business Climate in Corpus. A 30% decline in home sales on the island in 2007 shows how important that Beach Vote was to Corpus. We can't blame that decline on Foreclosure and Mortgage market. That decline came because people who wanted to invest in the ground floor opportunity on the island, backed out. Due to the Intrawest deals failure.

Few in Corpus Christi value Out-of-State people and the money they transfer to the community.... I know !
