I'll miss GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who has withdrawn from the race. I stepped off the plane from Chicago (broadcasting from the Chicago Regional Auto Show) and was given the word. I was shocked. I guess I might have been more shocked that it happened now, rather than that it happened. It seemed to be a matter of time, but I thought there was more campaigning left. I still don't understand the apparent disconnect between Republicans and conservatives. I realize the gap between being a Republican and being a conservative is wider than ever. Not as wide as, say, a river, but more like, oh, maybe a Bush. • According to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll, President Bush has reached his lowest approval rating with 30 percent of those polled saying they are happy with the job he's doing (overall) as president; he apparently is also at an all-time low in his support among Republicans.
Will anti-racists cheer for Obama?
I wonder what Lee Jasper, Ken Livingstone's big-mouthed race equality adviser, really makes of the idea of Barack Obama being president of the United States. Really makes of it, deep down inside. I wonder, too, what the Muslim Council of Britain feels about the prospect. Or anyone else who owes their position on the public stage to vociferous campaigning against racism. I am sure that all of them would tell you that they would welcome such an outcome. America with its first black president! How wonderful! I am equally sure that the truth is rather different. To help you understand why, I am going to try and answer what appears to be a very different question. What is Bill Clinton up to? Over the past fortnight the former President has been stumping hard for his wife.

Jon Mark Beilue: Gift cards will stop the insanity
Experience is a great teacher, and experience taught me to give up when trying to surprise someone like my wife with a Christmas/birthday/anniversary gift. If I'm told the store, the aisle, the table, the color, the sales associate, the brand - and it's written down - it's even money I'll get it right. If I strike out on my own for that something that's a surprise and they like it, it's an absolute fluke if they do. Such as a very recent birthday when I bought a jewelry box from Penney's for my wife because (a) it would have been perfect on the dresser, and (b) it was the first thing I saw in a nice display when I walked in the store. "Would it hurt your feelings if I took this back and..." No, not at all. In fact, it just reaffirmed I should have bought a gift card in the first place so you could go and shop and take your time and find the perfect item.

Braves considering Kotsay or Patterson for CF?
They're talking to teams about trading highly sought-after starter Joe Blanton (only 27 years old), and yes, plenty of Braves fans would love for Atlanta to get involved in that discussion (sure can't blame you). The Braves haven't ruled out adding another starter, but I'd be shocked if they were willing to give up the young talent required to trade for Blanton. However, the Billy Beane Bazaar could hold an answer to the Braves' desire to find a veteran CF to get them through the transition period between Andruw Jones and projected future CF standout Schafer, who should be ready by 2009 opening day, and perhaps by midseason 2008. Schafer might even be ready by '08 opening day, if the Braves deem it necessary and suitable to thrust him into the starting CF role without any experience above Class A ball.
